- Payment fee (3% of item + shipping + $0.30)−$1.85
- Shipping label−$7.20

## What a sale really leaves you

Enter what you paid for the piece, what it sells for and what the buyer pays for shipping. Then add what the sale costs you: the shipping label, packaging or cleaning, and the fees. Selling platforms usually take a percentage of the sale, sometimes plus a fixed amount per order, and payment processing can add its own percentage and fixed fee. Rates differ between platforms and change, so the boxes start with neutral example values: replace them with the figures from your platform's current fee page, and save them as a set to reuse.

Profit = buyer pays − fees − shipping label − item cost − other costs
Margin = profit ÷ buyer pays
Return on cost = profit ÷ (item cost + other costs)

The break-even price is the item price at which the sale leaves exactly nothing; below it, you pay to sell. Set a profit goal to see the price that reaches it.

## Questions

**Are fees charged on shipping too?**

It depends on the platform: some take their percentage on the item price only, others on everything the buyer pays, shipping included. Check your platform's fee page and set the switch to match.

**Why is the return on cost so high on cheap finds?**

It divides profit by what you spent, so a $2 find that earns $20 shows 1,000%. That helps when deciding what to buy, but the profit in money tells you more about whether a sale was worth your time.

**Does this include tax?**

No. Sales tax collected by a platform and income tax on your profits depend on where you live and how much you sell. Check the rules with your tax authority.
